Eleanor Melville, age 97, formerly of Burt, passed away Sunday, April 3, 2016. Eleanor Elizabeth Vogel, the daughter of Gottlieb John Frederick and Ada Helen (Carroll) Vogel, was born on June 3, 1919, in Burt, Iowa. She graduated from Burt High School in 1936. In 1940, Eleanor received a BA degree in Zoology from Grinnell College. She also received a MA degree from the University of Iowa Physiology.
On March 6, 1942, Eleanor was united in marriage with Robert Seaman Melville in Boston, MA. Eleanor was a member of the Eistophos Science Club in Washington, D.C. and the Bethesda Garden Club. She held a lifelong love for the land and people of Kossuth County. In 2004 she established the Fred and Helen Carroll Vogel Charitable Trust which has made contributions to several area schools, the town of Burt, the Burt Public Library, Exceptional Opportunities, the Algona POW Museum and the Algona Historical society. The Trust continues to operate following her passing.
Left to cherish Eleanor’s memory are two sons, John Frederick Melville of Baltimore, MD and Martin Carroll Melville of State College, PA; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Robert in 2005; twin daughters, Elizabeth and Christine in 1943; daughters, Emily Jean in 2009 and Margaret Ellen in 2011; and a son, Robert Andrew in 2009.
