Eleanor M. Garretson Hamilton, 96, Pendleton, died June 5, 2007, at Rawlins House, Pendleton. She was born April 13, 1911, in Pendleton, graduated from Lafayette High School, and attended Anderson Business College for two years. Eleanor graduated from St. John’s nursing training program in 1936 in a class of 15 nurses and went on to practice nursing.
She married Robert A. Hamilton, a former meat cutter for Heiney’s, on April 19, 1939. They built a home on Eleanor’s family’s farm outside of Pendleton where they lived together until Bob’s health caused him to no longer be able to live at home. Together, they spent many summers selling concessions at 4-H fairs, fish fries, horse shows, and many other events around the state.
Bob also was a hog farmer for many years and Eleanor also enjoyed painting, reading the newspaper daily, and keeping up on current issues. Eleanor was the mother of one son, James Robert, and grandmother to three granddaughters; Rhonda and husband, Ron Mills; Joanie and husband, Chuck Fowler and Chrissy and her husband, Pete Brown. Eleanor was also the proud great-grandmother to six great-grandchildren; Madison and Evan Fowler, Roland and Ryland Mills, and Rachel and Mathew Brown. Also, surviving is a special friend, James Dine.
Eleanor is preceded in death by her parents, Chester and Gladys Garretson; a brother, George; a sister, Esther; a daughter, Judith; and her husband of 65 years, Robert “Bob” Hamilton.
