Eldon F. Hellenga, 86, of Three Oaks, Michigan died at his home early Tuesday morning, April 8, 2014 with his wife at his side. Eldon was born May 25, 1927 in Three Oaks, Michigan to Fred and Dora (Scheevel) Hellenga. He grew up on the farm and graduated from Three Oaks High School in 1944.
He met Dorothy Schoppers in Minnesota while visiting relatives, they were married on October 26, 1951 in Greenleafton, Minnesota. Eldon was a hard worker and enjoyed tending his vineyards. He had a knack for fixing anything on the farm with the materials he had on hand. He was a member of the National Grape Co-op. He looked forward to his yearly trips to Deer Camp. Eldon was a member of The Gathering RCA in Three Oaks his entire life and participated in many ways throughout the years.
Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Dorothy; children, Joyce (Dan) Himebaugh of Ann Arbor, Michigan; Marcia (Tim) Sherrill of Three Oaks; Brenda (Ron) Warman of St. Joseph, Michigan and Darren (Tammy) Hellenga of Three Oaks; grandchildren, Jordan and Michael Sherrill, Raquel Hellenga, Nathan and Alex Warman; sister Betty Martin of Three Oaks; brother-in-law Verlyn Dornink of Spring Valley, Minnesota, his step granddaughters Crystal Bouma and Nikki Colley and their families along with many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his sister June Dornink and brother-in-law Bob Martin.
