Eileen Thomas Powell of Rockville, MD on Monday, September 22, 2014, at home with her husband John Powell. Eileen was born on September 24, 1929 and grew up in Chaska, Minnesota, the youngest of three children of Frieda and Ernest Thomas. After graduating high school in 1947 she worked for 6 years at the law firm of Guesmer, Carson, MacGregor & Clifford in downtown Minneapolis. During this time she also attended the University of Minnesota and MacPhail College of Music, graduating in 1953. While attending college she met her husband, John, also a student. They married in 1953 and resided mostly in Minnetonka in a home built by Eileen’s father, a building contractor. Eileen was a church organist while raising her family in Minnesota.
In 1969 the family relocated to Rockville, Maryland for John’s job and went on to raise four children in Rockville. When the children were school aged she went on to hold several administrative jobs with VITRO, then Mantech, and finally in the legal division of Marriott International until her retirement in 1994.
Eileen was a dedicated wife to John for over 60 years, loved raising her children and enjoyed music all her life.
She is survived by her beloved husband, John Powell, her children Douglas Powell of Rockville, MD, Scott Powell of Rockville, MD, Jodie Lide (Roger) of Frederick, MD and Jill Gartz (Kevin) of Mt. Airy, MD; grandchildren Nikki and Brittany Powell of Georgia, Daniel and Monica Powell of Rockville, Maryland, and Stephanie Gartz of Mt. Airy, Maryland; and her great grandchildren Aiden and Avery of Georgia.
