Eileen A. Krong, 96, of Jacksonville, IL, and formerly of Macomb, IL, died peacefully Monday evening, October 16, 2017, at Heritage Health in Jacksonville.
She was born May 4, 1921, in Nance County, NE, the daughter of James Stephen and Leura Eliza Bailey Arnold. She married Norman L. Krong on August 28, 1943, in Colorado Springs, CO, and he preceded her in death on October 17, 2009.
Eileen is survived by three children, Ruth Nastal (husband, Allan) of Weston, OH, Lois Herbst (husband, John) of Jacksonville, and Steven Krong (wife, Desta) of San Jose, CA; five grandchildren, Eric Herbst (wife, Amberly) of Normal, Michael Nastal (wife, Mindy) of Silt, CO, Laura Gupta (husband, Tim) of San Jose, CA, Ben Nastal (wife, Melanie) of Pendleton, IN, and Brianna Krong of San Jose, CA; and six great grandchildren, Isaiah, Chaius, Evan, and Lincoln Herbst, Joshua Gupta, and Logan Nastal.
She was preceded in death by four sisters, Edith Dodd, Sadie Ruth Clark, Betty Wallin, and Elsie Mae Arnold and a half brother, Sergel Peck.
Eileen was a graduate of Palmer High School in Nebraska and attended Nebraska Central College in Central City, which led her to teach at a one-room country school. Following her marriage to Norman, she worked at a nursery school and attended the University of Omaha. She later taught business and typing classes in Nehawka, NE.
They relocated to Fargo, ND, and later to Macomb, IL, where Eileen was active with her family’s activities and community organizations, including Sweet Adelines Barbershop Chorus, Meals On Wheels, WIU Faculty Wives, Home Extension Board, Daughters of the American Revolution, Girl Scouts, Cub Scouts and 4-H. She had been an active member of Wesley United Methodist Church in Macomb and enjoyed playing piano, singing, writing, sewing, cooking, and traveling in her spare time.
