Edwin Joseph Doody, age 85, died at Our Lady of the Lake Hospital in Baton Rouge on December 12, 2014 at 4:00 pm.  He was preceded in death by his wife of 63 ½ years, the late Mazie Ann Roy Doody.  He was the eldest child of the late Joseph J. and Hilda Surgi Doody.  Born September 2, 1929, Edwin is survived by his eight children: M. Patricia Doody, Stephen R. Doody (Sue), Claire E. Doody Glaviano, Shannon M. Doody Marrette (Lee), Timothy P. Doody (Ellen), Margaret J. Doody Price (Jamie), Kathleen B. Doody, and Sean Michael Doody (Beth), twenty-one grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.  He is survived by one sister, Joann Doody Hymel (Ray), and was preceded in death by his brother, James Doody.  Edwin is survived by many cousins, nieces and nephews.  He was a native of New Orleans but lived his adult life in Arabi, Louisiana, until Hurricane Katrina.  A 1951 graduate of LSU in Mechanical Engineering, he served in the U.S. Air Force from 1951 to 1953 and in the Air Force Reserves from 1953 thru 1956.  His professional career was spent as a mechanical engineer for Kaiser Aluminum, Chalmette Works, until it shut its doors in 1983.  He later worked as a consulting engineer for subsidiaries of Kaiser until his retirement in 1993.  He enjoyed being an engineer so much that he often said he never worked a day in his life.  He was a volunteer member of the St. Bernard Sewerage and Water Board.  Edwin was engaged and successful in many efforts to improve St. Bernard Parish.  His biggest disappointment, however, was his unsuccessful attempt to have the Mississippi River Gulf Outlet closed before Hurricane Katrina.  He accurately predicted the effect of the storm surge on St. Bernard, lobbied to have the MRGO closed and wrote weekly Op-Ed columns in the St. Bernard Voice newspaper on the danger posed by the ill-fated navigation channel.
