Edward R “Ed” Raymond Sr, 89, of Upper Fruitland died Friday, April 7, 2023, at San Juan Regional Medical Center in Farmington.
He was born on the Navajo Reservation, 5 miles southwest of Farmington, on February 22, 1934, to Lawton Raymond and Mae (Burton) Raymond. His clan is Naakai Dine’é born for Tó’dí’ch’iinii.
On August 24, 1962, Ed married Elsie Curley in Las Vegas, NV and she survives.
Ed’s survivors are his son Edward Raymond Jr. And his sisters Rosie Raymond-Tsosie (Ray) and Claudia Raymond Gleason (Jes).
He is preceded in death by his son Ralph O “Bud” Raymond, his parents, his sister Bessie “B” Bowman, and his brother Andrew Raymond.
Ed graduated from the Navajo Methodist Mission High School in May 1953. He attended McMurry College in Abilene and New Mexico Tech in Socorro. He was honorably discharged from the U. S. Army in August 1962. He was a field artillery surveyor specialist for almost 5 years, a rifle sharpshooter, and a recipient of a good conduct medal. Ed was also a surveyor/right-of-way agent and certified real estate appraiser for the Navajo Nation and for the Bureau of Indian Affairs for 10 years before becoming a public relations / governmental affairs manager for Utah International / BHP Minerals for 26 years. In terms of community service, he served as the Upper Fruitland Chapter president from 1987 to 1992. Ed loved cattle ranching, alfalfa farming, and raising, training & racing quarter and thoroughbred horses.
