Edward Larry Long, Sr. was born in Newnan, Georgia on February 18, 1928 to the late Alexander Stephens Long and Mary Frank McGhee Long. This young man quickly became known as Ed to all. He attended the Newnan City Schools.

He found employment with Pike Transfer Company and became the warehouse manager. After fulfilling his military obligations with the United States Army in 1955, he returned to Newnan and continued to work for Pike Transfer – a job he would hold throughout his working career. After returning home from the Army, he became friends with a pretty young girl named Ellen Tollerson.

On December 21, 1957 they would be married and were happily married for 56 years until her death in 2013. Ed was deeply committed to being his wife’s caregiver during her final illness. Ed had a very active life in the Newnan community. He was a faithful member of Coweta Lodge #60 F&AM.

He was also active in the local Moose Lodge. His community service also included 2 terms on the city council in Newnan and served on the Coweta County Water Authority. He and Ellen were deeply attached to their beloved Lovejoy Memorial United Methodist Church. Surviving Ed are his children Edward L. Long, Jr. and his wife Nancy, Jane Free and her husband Rick, Michael G. Bonner and his wife DeAnna. His daughter-in-law is Sherrill Bonner who was the wife of his late son, Bobby E. Bonner.

He is also survived by his grandchildren, Michele Bonner Harkins and her husband Dan, William H. Bonner, Heather Bonner, Edward L. Long, lll, Alexander Stephens Long, ll, Nolan E. Free, James E. Free and five great-grandchildren. Also surviving is his brother Emmett “Bud” Long.
