Edward J Nugent was born in Yonkers, NY in July 1932. He was the second son of Dorothy and Arthur Nugent. Ed was an active, spirited youth and involved in many sports in high school including golf, baseball and track. Before graduating from high school in 1950, he joined the Navy Reserve. He was activated in 1952, during the Korean War.
As luck would have it, during this time in a temporary position as a supply clerk at Merchants Fire Assurance Company, he met the love of his life, his future wife, Irene Theresa Barry. They married in August 1953 in Jersey City, NJ. and honeymooned in Lake George, NY. Ed and Irene had 3 babies, (Kathleen, Edward Jr, and Susan), in their first 3 years of marriage and quickly outgrew their little apartment! This prompted a move into their first home in Levittown, NY. It was during his years in Levittown that Ed also became a volunteer fireman.
Ed worked very hard and was quickly promoted. The family moved to a new house in West Islip, NY, where their 4th child, Irene was born. Two short years later another promotion brought the family to Marlton, NJ, as Dad accepted a job in Philadelphia with Uarco Business Forms and there the last baby girl, Dorothy arrived.
After all the kids graduated high school, Ed decided to move to Charlotte to accept
a job as Vice President with S&L Office Supplies. This was the move that made Irene and Ed fall in love with Charlotte. They loved the weather, golfing and St Gabriel
Church.
A devoted sports fan from New York, soon Ed became a Charlotte Hornets and Carolina Panthers fan extraordinare!
Ed is the father of five, grandfather of ten and great grandfather of 2. This July, he would have turned 86 and in August, Irene&Ed would have been married 65 years.
He passed away peacefully on Wednesday, June 20, 2018, after his second struggle with Aspiration Pneumonia. Ed will be missed by all who knew and loved him, but especially by his “honey” who was by his side through it all.
Serenity Prayer
God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change;
the courage to change the things I can;
and the wisdom to know the difference.
