On Friday, April 27, 2012, “EJ” went home to Glory. He was born June 15, 1952 to Edward James Mitchell Sr. and Clarissa Miller Mitchell in Mobile, Alabama. He was the fourth child of five.

EJ graduated from Mobile County Training School in 1970 and relocated to Courtland, AL where worked for the City of Decatur. Soon thereafter he started his career at Champion Paper Mill on Machine 34 as a Stock tender Operator. He retired with 41 years of service to International Papers formally known as Champion Paper Mill.

His most cherished hobbies were cooking and watching others enjoy his food.

As a youth he attended The Church of Good Shepherd of Mobile, AL. He attended several churches in the Decatur area until he settled his roots at First Missionary Baptist Church of Decatur, AL.

He leaves to cherish his memory: a devoted wife, Regina Mitchell of Decatur; loving parents: Edward and Clarissa Mitchell Sr. of Mobile; eight children: Troy (Lisa) King, Edward James Mitchell II both of Decatur, Katina Mitchell-Thomas, Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, Damon (Chasity) Mitchell, Moulton, Tenecia “Tillie” (Dumorris) Smith, Hillsboro, Ashley Mitchell, and Chantina Garth both of Decatur; four siblings: Ann (Joe) Cothran, Constance Allen, Yolanda (Rea) Esters and Darrell Mitchell all of Mobile, AL.; Thirteen grandchildren, a host of nieces and nephews and a very special friend Ricky “PI” McDaniel.
