Edward Henry Enger, Jr., editor, writer, philanthropist and husband was born in Minneapolis, MN on March 16, 1930 to Edward Henry Sr. and Anastasia (Barber) Enger. He received his Bachelors of Science degree in Education from the University of Minnesota in 1952 and earned his certification for teaching from the University of California Berkley in 1953. Ed served as a corporal in the U.S. Army in Korea after the Korean Conflict from 1954-56. In 1959, he met the love of his life, Carolyn “Sue” Bush, through mutual friends and coworkers at Row Peterson Publishing Company. After 5 years of dating, they married in Chatham, New Jersey on June 1, 1964.
Through the years, Ed had many professions and accomplishments: 9th -10th grade English teacher at Downers Grove High School in Illinois from 1956-58; editor (1958-62) & author (197578) at Harper & Row in Evanston, II; editor at Silver Burdett Company in Morristown, NJ from 1962-68; editor at Dell Publishing Company in New York City from 1968-75; author for N ational Textbook Company in Chicago, II from 1979-81; editorial director at Amsco School Publishers in New York City from 1982-97. Ed wrote several textbook series: Writing by Doing in 1981 and Language Basics from 1975-78. He was a member of the National Council of Teachers of English and honored by being mentioned in Who’s Who in America, 54th edition and Who’s Who in the East, 22nd edition.
Upon his retirement in 1997, Ed and Sue returned to Sue’s hometown of New Smyrna Beach, FL and became involved in the local Kiwanis Club and Smyrna Yacht Club.
His family will always remember Ed as a brilliant and kind man with a dry sense of humor and love of puns. Ed is survived by his wife, Carolyn “Sue” (Bush) Enger; sister Mrs. Harold W. (Mary Lou) Carlson; half-sister Mrs. John (Jean) Comaris and nieces & nephews.
