Edward Gartha Lewis, Sr. of West Milford, West Virginia was born in Westmoreland, Pennsylvania on December 2, 1925 to the late Luke Elisha Lewis (Louis) and Louisa Jane Welton O’Banion Lewis (Louis). His family name was originally Louis after his Italian grandfather; however, the name was changed after the family moved to Clarksburg, West Virginia when Ed was four years old. Ed had six brothers and sisters: William, Martha, Robert, Franklin, Louisa, and Sarah; a stepbrother, Richard Albert; and a stepsister, Estelle Brown Brewster. Edward Gartha Lewis, Sr. is survived by his only living sibling, Louisa Lewis (Louis) Wilkinson King.
Ed Lewis, Sr. was married twice. His first marriage was to the late Levinia “Deanie” Johnson Lewis, who he was married to for 32 years. The two had four children: Edward Gartha Lewis, Jr., William Harris Lewis, Adena Kay Scheuvront, and Starla Jean Lewis. Ed Lewis, Sr. married a second time to Margaret Smith Lewis, who he was married to for 27 years. With Margaret he was father to five stepchildren: John Sutton, Paula Wagman, Rebecca Aiken, David Smith, and Matthew Smith.
