Edward “Brian” Schwall age 78, died unexpectedly, but peacefully in the presence of his family, on Wednesday, January 31, 2018. He was born on December 29, 1939 in Staten Island, New York to Elizabeth and Edward Schwall. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Carole, and their two children, Brendan Schwall and Cristin McCoy, grandchildren, Joseph Schwall and Caitlin McCoy, and Brian’s only sibling Elizabeth Gilpatrick. He is preceded in death by his parents and nephew, Bruce Gilpatrick. Some of Brian’s lifelong friendships were made during his high school years attending St. Joseph’s Normal Institute for the Brothers of the Christian Schools (De La Salle) in Barrytown, New York. After high school, he entered the novitiate and continued his education as a Christian Brother at Catholic University in Washington DC, where he earned a Bachelor’s Degree in English Literature. He then went on to the University of Detroit, receiving a Master’s Degree in English Literature, and afterward pursued considerable coursework on the doctoral level in Education. As an educator and coach, Brian had a cheerful, caring demeanor and a lively sense of humor. His quick wit was enjoyed by those that were fortunate to know him. His vigorous intellect encompassed a wide range of interests, from fly-fishing, birdwatching, geology and all forms of nature, to Shakespeare and the poetry of Keats and Hopkins.
