Edna Victoria (Jones) Nichols, the daughter of the late Reverend Samuel E. Jones (nicknamed Die) and the late Annie R. (Green) Jones was born January 1, 1930 in Preston, Maryland. She surrendered her soul to the Lord on March 1, 2017. She was 87 years old.

Edna, a quiet and soft-spoken woman, was the youngest of 11 children. She was affectionately called “Baby Girl” by her father, her aunts and uncles, and local community elders. However, her mother, who named her, always called her Edna. Edna was an exceptionally bright student according to some of her former teachers and classmates. She was an alumna of Jonestown Elementary School, The Marsh Creek School, and Lockerman High School. She graduated from Lockerman in May 1947.

On February 9, 1950, Edna was united in holy matrimony to the late Ira Nichols of Hurlock, Maryland. They were married 50 years until his death on October 9, 2000. To this union six children were born.

During the early years of her marriage, Edna completed a correspondence nursing program. The knowledge she gained from her studies proved crucial during the latter years of the 1950s when all of her (then) four children simultaneously became infected with the dreadful and potentially fatal whopping cough. She feared that she could lose them all. She marked this event as the most troubling experience of her life. Also born out of this same episode was one of her most greatest achievements, because with much prayer and around the clock care she was able to nurse her children back to good health.

Edna joined Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church in 1954, and served in different positions there. She was also a member of Mount Calvary United Methodist Church until she passed. Edna and Ira made Preston their home. She worked different seasonal jobs, but homemaking was her primary occupation. She always wanted to be near home to care for the needs of her family and anyone else who needed to call on her for assistance.

Edna leaves to cherish her memories her six children; Emerson (Gennett) of Hurlock, MD, Doris White (Garmon) of Greenwood, DE, Ira Tyrone (Beverly) of Hurlock, MD, Elderidge (Vanessa) of Westampton, NJ, Reese (Elena) of Secretary, MD, and Kevin of Stuttgart, Germany. Additionally, she leaves behind 15 grandchildren, 33 great grandchildren, six great great grandchildren, three sisters-in laws; Ruth Jones of Preston, MD, Lena Nichols of Cambridge, MD, Ruby Pender of Linkwood, MD; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.

Preceding her in death were her ten siblings Evelyn, Martha, Mary Webb, Virginia Friend, Samuel, James, Silas, Lottie Friend; Carrie, and Herbert Jones.
