EDNA M. ROOD

1916 ~ 2017

Edna Mae Rood, 101, of Emmett, died Saturday, December 2, 2017.  Edna was born April 9, 1916 in Slocum, Arkansas, the seventh of 10 children to Mary and William Funk.  She moved to Idaho in 1928 with all of her siblings while her father stayed in Arkansas to finish out the crops.  Her mother died in 1923 prior to the move to Idaho.

Edna married Sherman Rood on November 21, 1936.  They were married for 66 years prior to Sherman’s death in 2003.  Edna and Sherman had two sons, E.C. “Cy” Rood and Ivan Rood.  Sherman felled trees in the logging business in Jerusalem, Idaho, and after the boys were born, the family moved to Emmett in 1943.  Edna spent her life as a homemaker; she gardened both out of choice and necessity and was also an avid quilter and enjoyed crocheting and painting.  Edna was often quoted saying, “the best thing I ever did was marrying my husband.”  Sherman and Edna enjoyed family time fishing, hunting and camping.

Upon Sherman’s retirement from Boise Cascade, Edna and Sherman continued their traveling, including trips to Alaska, Australia, New Zealand and Hawaii.

During her most recent years, Edna lived in the Apple Valley community in Emmett, where she delighted all those she came into contact with.  She formed a close bond with the staff of Apple Valley with her ornery banter that we all know and love.

Edna was preceded in death by her parents; all of her siblings; her husband, Sherman; son E.C. “Cy” Rood and daughter-in-law, Ruth Ann Rood; son Ivan; and one grandson.  She is survived by her grandchildren, Christine Rood (husband Hart Gilchrist) and Martin Rood (wife Melissa Rood); two great-grandchildren, Cy and Peri; and numerous nieces and nephews.
