Edna Bausch VanDerzee, 90, beloved wife of Leonard VanDerzee, 92, entered new life on Wednesday, Oct. 17, at High View Health Care Center, Middletown. Eight hours later, her husband joined her in paradise. Edna and Leonard were married for almost 71 years. They have lived for the last four and a half years at the Village at South Farms, Middletown.
Edna was born on August 2, 1917, the daughter of Joseph and Tinnie Bausch in Jamaica, NY. Orphaned as a toddler, Edna and her sister, Rose, were raised by their grandmother and other relatives.
Edna trained as a beautician but it was for her fierce love of family, her delicious cooking and her innate sense of style that she will be remembered forever by those who loved her.
Leonard was born on November 17, 1914 in Manhattan, NY, son of John VanDerzee and Henrietta Pollack VanDerzee.
Leonard graduated as valedictorian from Farmingdale High School on Long Island and went to work as a bookkeeper, eventually becoming general manager of Montauk Pontiac in Bayshore, Long Island. Leonard was known for his love of family, generous spirit and enjoyment of golf and cheering the Yankees.
They are survived by their beloved daughter, Judy, of Plainview, NY; their beloved son, Robert and his wife, Susan of Durham; 10 grandchildren, Richard Kerzner and his wife, Susan, Kathryn and her husband, Jerry Gunter, Deborah Kerzner, Cynthia Kerzner, Christina Kerzner, Barbara Bein and her husband, David, Keith VanDerzee and his wife, Brooke, Karin Coutsouridis and her husband, Peter, Mark Abby VanDerzee and his wife, Sasha, and Kate VanDerzee; 10 great grandchildren and two great grandchildren; Edna’s special cousin, Tina Sattig of Farmingdale, NY and Leonard’s sister, Joan Sykes and her husband, Roger of Florida and many nieces and nephews.
Edna was predeceased by her beloved sister, Rose Janzer. Leonard was predeceased by his loving sisters, Estelle Somers, Frances Keene, and Marge Columbus.
