When Edith Mary Brown passed away on May 17th she said goodbye to her 4 treasured daughters, Marion Gibson, Martha Brown Wolford (Ron), Katherine Moorhead and Victoria Walter, her 2 adored grandchildren, Hillary Brown and William Moorhead, her sister-in-law Ellen Ussher, beloved nieces, nephews, friends and many admirers.

Mary was the youngest of 7 children, born in King, 0ntario, Canada Dec. 30, 1931, to Edith Marion Douglas Ussher, an opera singer, and John Frederick Holmes Ussher, a stockbroker and Colonel in the Canadian Armed Forces.  Mary spoke often of her bucolic childhood, growing up on the family farm with her precious brother Terry, running in fields, swimming in lakes, galloping her treasured Thoroughbred hunter, Pat, while her signature braids stood straight out behind her.

After attending Queens University in Toronto, Mary married Everett Slater Brown, a GE executive. They moved to the scenic village of Skaneateles in upstate New York where their 4 daughters were born. They spent most of the winter weekends skiing and the summers enjoying the beautiful lake.

In 1970, the family moved to Anchorage, Kentucky where Mary and Ev spent many hours at horse shows with their girls and created costumes for the local Theater Group.

Mary was the quintessential genteel lady. She was a gracious hostess and always had the table perfectly set. Every day she had tea at 3 and was also a loyal fan of the cocktail hour. She was both proud and humble with an incredible wit. Her laugh was infectious, and she loved a good joke, even if the joke was on her.  Going out with Mimi was always an adventure. She talked to everyone and always over tipped. She could not pass up cooing babies, pointing out a glorious tree in full bloom or enjoying a magical sunset. These are the things that fed her soul. One of her greatest loves was fashion and shopping- especially at Talbots. She dressed impeccably and always had a lipstick in her purse.
