Edith Mae Tate Higgins, 90, of Dahlonega, GA. passed away on June 26th, 2016. She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred R. Higgins, in 2002. She is survived by her daughter, Joyce (Gene) Westmoreland and her son, Kenneth (Alice) Higgins. She is also survived by six grandchildren: Andrea Coulter, Alex (Jennifer) Menzel, Amber (Matt) Donnett, Ashley (Kadee) Sloan- Westmoreland, Eric (Julia) Higgins, Ben (Amanda) Higgins, fourteen ( soon to be fifteen ) great grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.
Edith was born in Broxton, Georgia to the late Stella Wimpy Tate and John Hubert Tate (Hub). She had four brothers: Carlton, F.W., Clinton and Ray Tate, and a sister Thelma Tow, all of whom predeceased her. She spent her early school years in the Coffee County public schools, but moved with two of her brothers to Lumpkin County and finished high school. After her marriage in 1945 and the birth of her two children, she graduated from Perry Business School in Gainesville. She was then hired by Louise Riddle, then director of Lumpkin County Welfare Department to be her secretary and soon thereafter became a social worker alongside Mrs. Riddle.
