Edgar H. Howells, 99, of Bethlehem, passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 11, 2012, at Kirkland Village Skilled Care Unit. He was the husband of the late Julia (Dunn) Howells for 52 years, and of the late Grace (Voorhees) Howells for 12 years. Born in Trenton, NJ, Edgar was a son of the late Frank E. and Edith (Morgan) Howells. A graduate of Westmont Upper Yoder High School in Johnstown, he went on to earn his BS in Metallurgical Engineering from Lehigh University in 1934. He was a member of the Golden Legion of Phi Delta Theta fraternity, and president of the Chapter House Association for many years. He received several Lehigh alumni awards, including the Joseph Persa and George Stutz Reunion awards. He was a long-time season ticket holder for football and wrestling at Lehigh, attending over 70 football games, and 50 EIWA and 20 NCAA wrestling tournaments. The Edgar H. Howells 34 Endowed Scholarship was established in his honor, with preference for a member of the wrestling team. He worked at Bethlehem Steel for 43 years, retiring in 1976 as Assistant to the Chief Metalurgical Engineer. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Bethlehem, and of Saucon Valley Country Club. Survivors: daughter Anne H. Ruyak and husband John of Orefield; sons Robert D. Howells of Sonoma, CA, Edgar H. Howells, Jr. and wife Judith of Pacific Palisades; stepdaughter Carol Voorhees of Allentown; stepson Robert Voorhees; grandchildren Gregg Ruyak and wife Doreen, John Ruyak and wife Sharon, Matthew Ruyak and wife Lisa, Laura Howells, Robert D. Howells, Jr., David Howells, Stephani Scott and husband John, Andrew Howells and wife Lisette, Christopher Howells and wife Regina; step-grandson Matthew Voorhees; great-grandchildren Shea, Riley, John, Patrick, Ryan, Poppy, Lily, Sydney, and Annabelle.
