Earl Morris Newby, 80, of Jacksonville, died Sunday, July 11, 2010, at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield after a long illness.

He was born Dec. 11, 1929, in Lynnville, the son of Claude and Dorothy Casson Newby. He married Jewel Alexander in Franklin in January of 1951.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years; three children, Karen (Ray) Mellor, Dale (Cindy) Newby and Gerald (Edie Coats) Newby, all of Jacksonville; six grandchildren, Lynn and William Mellor, Paul Newby, and Jonathan, Jeffrey and Kirklin Newby; and three sisters, Helen (Buck) McCurley of Arizona, Doris Herman of Texas and Betty (Merle) Steward of Woodson.

Mr. Newby was a 1949 graduate of Jacksonville High School, and was a member of East Keyes Baptist Church in Springfield. He served his country in the Korean War with the United States Army. He retired after 25 years at Eli Bridge Company. Earl enjoyed woodworking, camping, reading and spending time with his family.
