Benton, Earl L.

Earl was a loving, hard working, husband to Una Benton, they were married over 60 years. Dear father to Colleen Benton Maraio, Chris Benton, and the Late Earl Leroy Benton Jr. “Butch”, Grandfather to David Dicus, Laura Dicus, and Charles Poole Jr., Great Grandfather to Devin Weaver and Maxwell Poole. Earl proudly served his country in the United States Air Force and was a member of the American legion. He loved to fish and was an amazing cook.  At family summer cookouts there would always be some sort of competition on who made the best crab soup, Earl took the prize, at least he thought he did.

He was very charismatic and enjoyed his job as a seafood and meat manager. His customers loved him and followed him to different stores just to talk and get his recipes, that he actually wrote down on index cards in his spare time to hand out to them.  He was always quick with a smile and a polite hello.

In the summer on vacations, he would enjoy long walks on the beach with his kids and nieces and nephews, he was loved by everyone who met him.  To family and friends he was simply Uncle Earl.

“Don’t grieve for me, for now I’m free.
I’m following the path God laid for me.
I took His hand when I heard Him call.
I turned my back and left it all.
I could not stay another day,
to laugh, to love, to work or play.
Tasks left undone must stay that way, I found peace at the close of day.
If my parting has left a void,
then fill it with remembered joy.
A friendship shared. a laugh, a kiss,
Ah yes, these things I too will miss.
Be not burdened with times of sorrow,
I wish you the sunshine of tomorrow.
My life’s been full, I savored much
good friends, good times,
a loved ones touch.
Lift up your heart and share with me.
God wanted me now; He set me free.”
