Earl Calhoun Jr., 73, of Elkhart, passed away following a brief illness at the Center for Hospice Care in Elkhart at 6:55 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 3.
He was born in Covington, Tenn., April 13, 1943, to the late Earl and Betty (Boykins) Calhoun, and later married Velma “Jean” Booze in Elkhart.
Surviving are his children, Debra Johnson, Bryant Calhoun, Michael and Timothy (Mikki) Taylor, Stephanie Conard, Nelson (Simone) Lewis, Robert (Renee) Booze and Robbin Sharp; siblings Alice (Darryl) Washington and Charles, Johnny, Willie, Bobby (Peggy), Thomas (Gertrude), Donald (Damita), Glen “Pete”, Anita. Adrian, Byron (Maggie) and Frank Calhoun; and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Marvin Calhoun Sr, and a nephew, Sgt. Marvin Calhoun,Jr., U.S. Army, who was killed in Afghanistan in 2010.
Earl spent several years as a truck driver but retired from L.E. Johnson of Elkhart. Junior, or “Whiskey” as his closest friends knew him, loved to attend his annual high school reunions, spend time with his family, cook barbecue and, of course, eat. He served honorably in the U.S. Army in Germany during the Vietnam War and will be best remembered for his colorful sense of humor and words of wisdom.
