Dwain Johnson, age 58, of West Liberty, passed away Friday, August 24, 2018, at the U.K. Bluegrass Hospice Care Center in Lexington.

He was born October 2, 1959, at McDowell in Floyd County, the son of Otis Dathan Johnson and Zelma Bates Johnson.

Dwain is survived by his wife, April Ginter Johnson, whom he married February 6, 1999; one daughter, Savannah Johnson, at home; two sons, Matthew (Ellaine) Thompson of Virginia Beach, Virginia, and Nathan (Mahleah) Thompson of Dayton, Ohio; his mother, Zelma Bates Johnson of Bevinsville; and six grandchildren, Dustin, Madison, Lily, Emma, William, and Grayson.

He is also survived by two sisters, Kathy Lynn Johnson and Terri Glynn (Kenneth) Meade, all of Bevinsville, as well as a host of nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, extended family and friends.

Dwain was preceded in death by his father and both sets of grandparents.

Dwain graduated from Wheelwright High School and attended Pikeville College. He spent most of his life as a construction worker and miner and was commonly referred to as “The Rock” by his friends and co-workers. His final job, before he became disabled in 2010, was with TECO Coal Company in Perry County. He and April had been foster parents to many children and were currently fostering three boys. Dwain loved to fish, be outdoors, and make people laugh, even when he was sick.
