Duane Sickels, 69, of White Bird, Idaho died peacefully at his home, Aug. 2, 2018, with his wife and children by his side.Duane was born Sept. 29, 1948 in Ontario, Ore.
His family lived in Payette, Idaho, Hermiston, Ore and then moved to California where he started the first grade. They then moved to Idaho County, finally settling in White Bird, during his third grade. He went to White Bird Elementary, Grangeville High School and Salmon River High School in Riggins, Idaho.
He married Sharon in July 1967 and volunteered for the draft into the Army in Jan. 1968. He spent one year in Vietnam and received two Purple Hearts and two Bronze Stars, one being for Valor. He was a member of American Legion White Bird Post 152. Duane hauled his first load of logs in Dec. of 1967. He rode to the woods with one of the Robinett boys to spend the day. One of George Robinett’s workers got hurt and they were short a log truck driver. George asked Duane if he could get that loaded truck to the mill and he said, “I can try”, and so started a long career of truck driving. He drove logging truck in Idaho and Washington and hauled nearly everything on the roads in Alaska.
