Dr. Sanford Warren Harvey was a lifelong resident of Middletown and Higganum, CT. He died Monday evening, Sept. 19, 2016 at this home, in Middletown, in hospice care, surrounded by his children after a brief illness. He was born in Middletown, CT, on May 16, 1922, serving as Junior Class President at Woodrow Wilson High School, class of 1940. He was also a graduate of Wesleyan University class of 44 and Cornell University Medical College class of 46. Between 1948 and 1958 he entered private practice with his father, the late Dr. Carl C. Harvey, in Middletown and was recalled into the army to serve as a doctor during the Korean War. From 1957 to 1960 he studied at Yale Medical School to specialize in the new field of Physical Medicine. He was the Chief of Middlesex Memorial Hospital’s Physical Therapy Department from 1960 to 1987 and later worked as a consultant at Rocky Hill Veterans Hospital and Uncas-on-Thames Hospital retiring at the young age of 75. Dr. Harvey was always known for his compassion and caring bedside manner as well as his diverse interests and curiosity. He never hurried his patients and often stayed late at the hospital. Dad, later known as “Doc Harvey” was a caring and supportive husband, father and grandfather, even in his last days. He left behind many caring friends. Of himself he said, “My life has been filled with the most extraordinary opportunities, good fortune, and great connections…I am always learning…I seem to have gone from opportunity to opportunity through these many amazing years, which includes finding this wonderful One MacDonough Place without knowing much about it beforehand. I have always enjoyed talking to people one-on-one, but it’s funny how I had considered myself a slow learner and kind of naive all my life, until I got to be an old man, so my life led up to my now feeling good about myself. Maybe that’s true of most of us. My current interests include keeping physically and mentally fit.” Our Dad has been a lifelong avid boater and bicyclist. Most recently Dad has been known for enjoying his family, friends, and checkers playing. His family greatly appreciates the privilege of having had him as our father for so many years.

Sanford “Doc” Harvey is survived by: one sister, Hope Graf of Topsham, ME; one son, Peter S. Harvey and his wife, Lucy Wolleager of Calais, VT; five daughters, Linda L. Harvey of Canton, MA; Diane N.
