Dr. Robert E. Losert, DMD of Plymouth passed away peacefully at his home on Friday evening, May 7, surrounded by his family. He was the beloved husband of Karolin A. (Manackas) Losert. They were married for 63 years. Bob was born in New Bedford, Mass. on May 23, 1936, son of the late Erwin and Emma (Travers) Losert. He received his high school diploma from New Bedford High School (1953) and attended Tufts College from 1953-1955, when he was accepted early by Tufts University School of Dental Medicine. He received his DMD degree in 1959, just shy of his 23nd served with the U.S. Navy aboard the U.S.S. Kitty Hawk, San Diego, voyage from 1959 until 1963 as dental officer. He was part of the ship’s crew for its maiden voyage. During his time in the service, he crossed the equator, witnessed an atomic test and saw much of the world. After returning to Massachusetts, he opened a dental practice in Shrewsbury. He was very active in his profession and served many positions in the Massachusetts Dental Society, including president in 1996. The quality of his work and his honesty earned the respect of patients and peers alike. He worked toward advancing quality in dental practices, serving many years on the Massachusetts Dental Society’s peer review committee (1975-1984, chair 1983-1984) and quality control committee (1975-1982, chair 1978-1983). He was also a member of the board of directors for EDIC, the Eastern Dentists Insurance Company. Passionate about continuing education, Bob joined the Board of General Dentistry and was elected to the Pierre Fauchard Academy, a nonprofit organization that encourages dental research and information-sharing independent from commercial interests. Upon his retirement, Bob and Karolin moved to Plymouth, where they enjoyed living in the Great Island community of Pine Hills. Several dental schools and organizations sought his expertise, but he opted to relax and work on his tennis game. Bob and Karolin also enjoyed many trips after his retirement. They traveled around the world, but their favorite adventures were a trip to Egypt and an African safari. Bob was an avid sports fan, and when his children were growing up, you could always find him cheering them on at their games. When his grandchildren were growing up, they could count on “Grandpa” or “Papa” to encourage them in their sports, but particularly in their studies. Besides his loving wife Karolin, he is survived by his children: Robynne Whitaker of Talent, Ore.; Kurt Losert of Wellesley, and Kirstin Losert and her spouse Mara Slawsky of Northampton. His grandchildren Paige and Rosalind Whitaker and Merritt and Travers Losert will miss his solid and loving presence.
