Robert Collier Jones, M.D., resident of Des Moines, Iowa, peacefully passed away December 27, 2021 at Methodist Medical Center, surrounded by family.

Bob was born on February 20, 1927, to Harold and Pattie Robinson Jones in Royal Oak, Michigan. He graduated from Royal Oak High School in 1945, and then enlisted in the Army Air Corps Reserve in Fort Sheridan, IL. He graduated from the University of Michigan in 1948 and its Medical School in 1953.

He married Grace McLaughlin on January 26, 1957. He joined the Navy as part of the “Doctor Draft” on August 1, 1959. His Naval career took him from Oakland, CA to Indianapolis, IN, then to the Great Lakes Naval Base. He served as the chief of neurosurgery at the Great Lakes Naval Hospital and achieved the rank of Commander. He joined the practice of Dr. John Bakody in Des Moines in 1966 and practiced until 1997.

When his daughters were young, Bob converted to Catholicism. His faith was very important to him. He was an accomplished musician, composing and playing the piano until weeks before his death. One of his greatest joys was playing for an audience. Bob was a great sportsman, and loved playing tennis and golf, and fishing. He was a member of Rotary Club, Serra Club and Des Moines Golf and Country Club. He was active in the community and loved entertaining with his wife Grace.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Gordon and George. He is survived by his beloved wife Grace of 64 years, his children Mollie Smithson (David) and their children Eliza, Maria, Kate, J.P. and Madeline, Cindy Jones Helgason (Mike) and their children Pete and Robbie, Tim Jones and his children Mackenzie, Christian and Haley, and two great-grandchildren.
