Dr. Richard T. Anderson passed away on Monday September 24, 2018 at home. He leaves his loving wife of 39 years, Mary Jane, his sister-in-law Kathleen Nelson and her husband Harold, several cousins and his beloved terriers, Abigail and Lily. Dick was born in Somerville, MA in 1935, the son of the late Peter W. and Rita B. (Abbott) Anderson. After graduating from Somerville High School, he earned a B.S. in Ed. And a M. Ed. From Salem State, a M.A. from Boston State, and then a Doctorate in Education degree with a specialty in Geographic Education from Boston University. Dick began his teaching career at Somerville High School and then accepted a position in the Department of Geography at Salem State College in 1969 where he taught for 31 years until his retirement. He was active in a number of professional organizations including the Association of American Geographers, the National Council of Geographic Education and the New England – St. Lawrence Valley Geographical Society. Throughout most of his academic life, Dick had a passion for promoting geography in the classroom.
