Dr. Ray O. Arganbright, 88, of Galesburg, died at 12:20 p.m. on Saturday, September 4, 2010, at O.S. F. St. Mary’s Medical Center. He was born June 26, 1922, in Newman, Illinois, the son of Clark and Mary Catherine Arganbright.
He married Mary Allen Hartman in 1947, in DuQuoin, Illinois.
She preceded him in death in 1999. Survivors include three daughters, Jane (Norman) Pifer of Ajijic, Jalisco, Mexico, Jean (Doug) Long of Galesburg, and Barbara (Dave) Wickness of Dunlap; 6 grandchildren, Jen Pifer Bixler, Mandy Pifer, Jeff Long, David Long, Peter Blanton, and Mary Blanton; and 3 great-grandchildren. Ray was preceded in death by his parents, wife, sister (Sannie Lucas), son (Joe), grandson (Jon), and an infant sister.
Ray attended Newman High School, Southern Illinois University, and St. Louis University, School of Dentistry. He was a dentist for 40 years, retiring in 1985. Ray served in the Air Force from 1948 to 1951. He was a member of Central Christian Church of Decatur; Illinois Dental Association; past president of the Decatur Dental Society, and was a member of the Country Club of Decatur. Ray was a woodcarver (whittler); obtained a private pilot’s license, and was an avid golfer. He achieved this over his golfing career of three holes in one. For many years Ray bowled in a regular Friday night bowling league. He loved gardening and grew beautiful roses. He played the piano for his and his family’s enjoyment. Ray also coached his son’s little league teams.
