Dr. Michael Robert McCoy (Mike) passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family, on December 28th, after a courageous eight-year battle with cancer. Mike was a generous, adventurous, thoughtful, and quiet giant who deeply loved his family and prioritized excellent and compassionate care to his patients. Mike was born in Atlanta, Georgia, on June 13th, 1950, to Jean and Bob McCoy, while his Dad was a student-athlete at Georgia Tech. After finishing at Tech, The Family moved to Rossville, GA, during its thriving heyday, where he spent an idyllic childhood on the notorious Beech Street with his sister Susan (McCoy) Wells. Like his father, Mike attended Central Junior/High School (Dodds Ave) to play football for the infamous Coach “Red” E.B. Etter. While at Central, he was an exceptional student and stellar athlete. He was recruited throughout the Southeastern Conference and ended up in the greatest college town on earth, Athens, Georgia, to play between the hedges, at the University of Georgia, on a full football scholarship for Coach Vince Dooley. He excelled as a student athlete.
After graduating from UGA, he went to the Medical College of Georgia. Upon graduating from medical school, he completed a residency in internal medicine at Baptist Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee, and was selected as Chief Resident. While in residency, he met one of his best friends, Dr. Bill Haik, and upon completing their residency, they started a private practice together in Fort Walton Beach, Florida. He fell in love with the Emerald Coast and maintained a second home there for the duration of his life. The dynamic duo built a very successful internal medicine practice that they later sold to pursue new and different opportunities in medicine.
Mike was a remarkable physician, Son, Brother, Brother-In-Law, Uncle, and friend. After medicine, his great passions were world travel, fine arts, the theatre, music, extraordinary culinary experiences, the beach, and college football. It was also important to him to ensure his nieces had exposure to that same world travel and the arts, which has profoundly shaped their lives, careers, and international interest in business, geopolitics, and global medicine. Mike was one of the most generous and compassionate men, he was so deeply loved by his family and friends, and he will be tremendously missed.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, John L. and Fay McCoy, Luther and Bettye Adcock, and his parents, Robert (Bob) and Jean McCoy. He is survived by his sister Susan (David) Wells, and nieces Dr. Katie Wells and Elizabeth Wells.
We would like to extend a profound thank you to Lindsay, Jenny, Hannah, Rodney, and Ben from Hearth Hospice for their compassionate and dignity-filled care, along with Ashley, who provided additional private nursing care during the last week of his life.
