Dr. Matthew L. Burns, 78, went to meet his maker after a long illness. He died Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, November 28, 2013 at his home in Newnan. Dr. Burns was the last of six children born Christmas Day 1934 in Lake City, FL to the late William James Burns & Annie Lewis Burns. He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Pat Brusky Burns; daughter, Jennifer Burns Barber & her husband David, her son Michael and David’s children David, Jr., Jimmy, and Mary; son, Matthew “Buddy” Burns & his wife Annette, and their children Matthew III, McCullough, Hays, & Branch; daughter, Julie Burns Richards and her children, Genevieve and Adam; sister, Mildred Zalinski of Orange Park, FL; brother, Robert Lewis Burns of Marietta, GA. Dr. Matt graduated from LSU where he played football all four years. He went on to Emory University Medical School, intern, and residency sponsored by the U.S. Air Force, retiring as a Lt. Col. He and his family moved to Newnan in 1972 when he began practicing medicine at Papp Clinic. When an old football injury began to compromise his surgical skills he went on to work for the State of Georgia as a consultant for the licensing board for hospitals and physicians. He finished his career as the first Medical Director of Piedmont Fayette Hospital. He loved his family, football, hunting and fishing but he especially loved being a Physician. Medicine was his life and Papp Clinic his home away from home. His life was good, he often said he would do ALL of it over again. The family thanks Amedisys Hospice for the care given to both them and Dr. Burns.
