He passed away at 2:45 a.m. Friday, July 24, 2009 at Miller’s Merry Manor. Born Sept. 12, 1917, in Harper’s Ferry, Iowa, he was the son of Daniel and Emma (Robinson) Cahalan. He was married on June 28, 1952, in St.
Dr. Cahalan was a local veterinarian, having retired in 1993 after 43 years of practice. He attended a one-room elementary school and high school in Waukon, Iowa. He received a bachelor of science degree from the University of Iowa in physical education, and a doctor of veterinary medicine from Iowa State University.
Awards that he received include a Logansport Community School Corporation’s “Pillar of the Community,” Logansport Exchange Club’s 1994 “Book of Golden Deeds,” the 2000 Pharos-Tribune’s “Good Neighbor Award” (along with his wife, Betty); and the Silver Beaver and St. George awards for Sagamore Council Boy Scouts of America, where he was a long-time leader of Troop 227.
Dr. Cahalan had been a member and past president of the Cass County Park Board. He had also led nature hikes at France Park. He was a member of the former St.
“Doc” was a devoted family man.
Surviving are his wife of 57 years: Betty Cahalan, Logansport; children, Marilyn Cahalan, South Bend, Patty Jo (Russ) Connors, St. Paul, Minn., Tim (Susan) Cahalan, Logansport, Carol (Patrick) Deignan, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Tom (Joanie) Cahalan, Medina, Ohio; 10 grandchildren: Ryan, Meg, Jimmy and Emma Deignan, Sarah and Laura Cahalan, Dan and Shannon Cahalan, Elizabeth and Patrick Connors; one sister, Rose Marie Stephens, Turlock, Calif.; and a number of nieces and nephews also survive.
Preceding him in death were five brothers and one sister.
