Dr. Joseph H. Reno, born March 5, 1915, in Allentown, PA, son of Harvey Reno and Olive Mae Wilson Reno, died October 29, 2008, in Sedona AZ. His wife of 63 years, Maude Olivia Reno died previously in May of 2005.
He is survived by two sisters, Gertrude Petzel, (Henry) of Bethlehem, PA, and Marion McGinnis (Walt) of Dallas, Texas, and one sister-in-law, Bonnie Reno of Phoenix, AZ. A brother, Harvey Reno died previously. Dr. Reno is also survived by his four children, Sally Jo Elliott (Hal) of Austin, Texas, J. David Reno (Anna) of Boston, MA, Diana J. Farber-Reno (Warren) of Peterborough, NH, and Deborah M. Reno (John) of Albuquerque, NM, plus five grandchildren, and 6 great-grandchildren.
Dr. Reno attended Central Boys High School, Temple University, and Temple Medical School, in Philadelphia, PA. He did his residency in orthopedics at Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children in Dallas, Texas. He practiced medicine first in Bethlehem, PA for 23 years and then in Flagstaff, Arizona from 1971 until his retirement. He established the first practice in Orthopedic Medicine in Northern Arizona. He was nationally known for his early innovations in hip surgery techniques. He volunteered many hours working with the Easter Seals Children’s Clinics in the aftermath of the polio epidemics of the 1950s.
Dr. Reno always involved himself as a team physician in college athletics, first at Lehigh University, in Bethlehem, PA, then at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, AZ. He was hired for 7 years as the athletic physician for Arizona State University after retiring from active practice.
Dr. Reno was a Mason and a York Rite Knights Templar, receiving his 50-year pin in the Spring of 2008 from the Grand Lodge of Arizona. He was also an avid outdoorsman, hunter, and horseman, competing in 100-mile competitive trail rides and traveling to Arizona and Wyoming to hunt even while living on the East Coast.
Services for Dr. Reno will be held at Norvel Owens Mortuary, 914 East Route 66, in Flagstaff, AZ on Saturday, November 1, at 5 pm.
