Dr. John Randall Neff, 58, passed away at Baptist Memorial Hospital of North Mississippi in Oxford on Thursday, January 30, 2020. Dr. Neff was born in Downey, CA on July 2, 1961. He graduated from La Sierra High School in 1979 and earned a Bachelors in History from California State Polytechnic in 1989. In 1993 he received his Masters in History from the University of California in Riverside and completed his PhD there in 1998. He joined the faculty of the University of Mississippi as Associate Professor of History in 1999. During his career at the University, he received several accolades, including the College of Liberal Arts – Outstanding Teacher of the Year award in 2005, the University of Mississippi Humanities Teacher of the Year award in 2009, and Elsie M. Hood Outstanding Teacher Award in 2009. His legacies include his book, Honoring the Civil War Dead: Commemoration and the Problem of Reconciliation, and the University of Mississippi Center for Civil War Research, which he founded in 2009. He was a life-long student, a world traveller, a storyteller, and devoted to his family. Dr. Neff is survived by his wife, Kathy Neff of Oxford; two daughters, Molly Neff of Oxford and Autumn Smith-Neff Ferguson and her husband, Drew of St.. Dr. Neff was preceded in death by his mother, Patricia Archer Neff and his mother and father in law, Patsy and Roger Bittmann..M. until 6:00 P.M…M…M. in the fellowship hall..
