Dr. John Ferguson McKenney, April 10, 1916 – February 2, 2010.

Dr. John F. McKenney, age 93, of Temple. Dr. McKenney died Tuesday in a Temple nursing home. He was born April 10, 1916 in Lexington, Kentucky. He graduated Versailles High School in Versailles, Kentucky in 1933, Tulane University, Doctor of Medicine 1941, Internship at Scott and White Hospital 1941-1942, Residency at Scott and White Hospital 1942-1943 and 1946-1949, Certified by American Board of Surgery 1952.

He served in the U.S. Army Medical Corp 1943 to 1946. Fellow of the American College of Surgeons 1953, Senior Surgical Staff at Scott and White 1949-1981, Consulting Surgeon at G.C. & S.F. Hospital 1949 to 1981 and McCloskey Veterans Hospital. Board of Trustees at Scott and White 1949 to 1981, Vice-President, 1963-1964, President from 1969-1970, President of Bell County Medical Society 1956-1957, Professor of Surgery Texas A&M College of Medicine 1980-1981.

His civic activities include, Charter Member Temple Law Enforcement Advisory Board 1970, Chairman 1971-1983, Charter Member Temple Area Crimestoppers 1983, Chairman 1985, Board of Directors Ralph Wilson Youth Club, President 1990-1996, Temple Quarter Back Club 1985, Chairman 1985 – 1988, South Rotary Club Outstanding Citizen Award 1990, American Legion Post 133 Life Member, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1820 Life Member.

He was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Temple before joining Christ Episcopal Church in Temple in 1997 where he was a member of the Vestry. He married Bernice Elizabeth “Bunny” McKenney April 20, 1946 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She preceded him in death in 2009. Dr. McKenney is survived by several nieces and nephews.
