FUGAL Jan Peter, M.D. age 71, of Milford, beloved husband of 30 years to Nancy Jean Canfield Fugal, passed away on Sunday, June 27, 2010 in Milford Hospital after a long illness. The son of the late Glen Roy and Olive Harris Fugal, he was born in Bridgeport Hospital on July 18, 1938. Dr. Fugal was a graduate of Milford High School class of 1956, Yale College class of 1960 where he majored in Sociology and SUNY Downstate Medical School where he earned his M.D. in 1967. He also served on an LDS mission in Germany from 1960-1961. He did his pediatric internship & residencies at the Hospital of St. Raphael and at Yale-NH Hospital, including a fellowship in Neonatology. Dr. Fugal served active duty in the U.S. Army from 1970-73 at Ft. Meade & later Ft. Richie Maryland reaching the rank of Major. He established Eastshore Pediatrics, P.C. in 1976 where he had an active practice until his recent illness. Dr. Fugal faithfully served on the Milford Board of Education from 1987 to 1999. He was a sports physician for the Ray Tellier Midget Football League and Notre Dame High School hockey and football teams both of West Haven, as well as for the Foran and Law football teams in Milford. He was inducted into the Notre Dame Knights of Honor in 2001. A musician by heart, Dr. Fugal enjoyed playing the drums, trombone and piano. He is survived by his sister Sara Christine Fugal Newell and her husband Dix of Walnut Creek, CA, his sister Kristina Gretchen Fugal Sancher and her husband Abraham of Milford, CT, the children of his former wife Barbara Ellen Romaine, including Terry Ellen Fugal (deceased), Sherri Lee Fugal Furce and her husband Robert, Edward Roy Fugal and his wife Patricia, Jan Peter Fugal II and his wife Tabatha, Kurt Garrett Fugal and his wife Sherry, the children of his wife Nancy Jean Canfield Fugal, including Laurie Lynn Fugal Ott and her husband William, Howard Hugh Fugal and his wife Stephannie, Rebecca Jeanne Fugal, Lisbeth Ane Fugal Greist and her husband Harold, Ashlee Elisabeth Canfield Fugal (deceased), twenty grandchildren, and twelve nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his in-laws Raymond G. and Winifred E. Canfield of Milford and Erik P. Chiarelli an extended family member.
