Upland: Dr. James H. “Doc” Oliver, Jr., 83, passed away Thursday evening, September 5, 2013, in University Nursing Center, Upland. He was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the son of the late James H. and Susie M. (Stone) Oliver, Sr. Dr. Oliver graduated from Taylor University in 1952 and from Northwestern Medical School in 1957.
He later earned his Masters in Public Health from the University of California at Berkeley. He was a Fellow of AeroSpace Medicine, and was Board Certified in Preventative Sports Medicine. He married Nan Williams on June 13, 1955. She survives. Dr. Oliver served for 20 years in the United States Air Force from 1958 to 1978, as a Flight Surgeon.
He served in the Vietnam War. In 1981, he moved with his family to Upland from Derby Kansas, where he served as physician at Taylor University Health Center, and owned a private practice in Upland. He also worked at Ambucare in Marion, before his retirement in 2001. He was a member of the Air Force Association, Christian Medical Dental Association, American College of Sports Medicine, volunteered with the Indiana Board of Veteran Affairs, and served as one of the few FAA certified physicians in the state.
Survivors include his wife, Nan Oliver, Upland; four sons, Jamie, Upland, Doug, Winter Haven, Florida, Brad (Deborah), Colorado Springs, Colorado, and Malcolm (Mary), Republic, Missouri; three daughters, Anne (Randy), Angleton, Texas, Kathy (Dan), McLaughlin, South Dakota, and Susan, Upland; two brothers, George (Kay), Amsterdam, New York, and Bill (Patti), Ballston Spa, New York; a sister, Nancy (Jim), Lenoxville, Quebec; sixteen grandchildren; and one great grandchild.
