Edward Edmond Bellens, 83, died October 13, 2017. Edward was born on January 13, 1934 to Hendrik Bellens and Maria DeWilde Bellens in Aalst, Belgium. A native of Belgium, Dr. Bellens immigrated to the United States in 1965 and joined the Scott and White staff in 1970 as a board certified otolaryngologist/head and neck surgeon (ENT). He served as an associate professor of surgery at the Texas A&M University Health Science Center College of Medicine and a consultant to the Olin E. Teague Veterans’ Center.

He served on several committees at Scott & White. He was a Fellow of the American Academy of Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery and a member of the American and Texas Medical Associations, the American Academy of Otolaryngology, the Bell County Medical Society, the Southern Medical Association and the Bell County Emeritus. Dr. Bellens received his medical degree from the University of Louvain, Belgium. He completed a rotating internship at the University Hospitals of Louvain and special training in tropical medicine at the Tropical Institute in Antwerp, Belgium.

From 1959 to 1962, he served as medical director of the Belgian government’s hospitals in Sassi (East Province) and Baudouinville (Katanga Province) in Congo, Africa. He was in private general practice in Steenhuffel, Belgium from 1962 until he came to the United States in 1965. He completed a residency in general surgery at Broward General Hospital in Fort Lauderdale, Florida in 1967 and a residency in otolaryngology at the Medical College in Richmond Virginia in 1970. He retired from Scott & White in 1998.

Edward enjoyed hiking, camping, canoeing and kayaking and visited many national parks. He was a member of the Bell County Piddle & Paddle Club. He traveled worldwide. His three children were born on different continents. He played several musical instruments.

He married Mia Cardyn in Louvain, Belgium on September 12, 1959. They had three children. He is survived by his wife, Mia of 58 years. He is survived by his daughter, Barbara Bozon and husband Carl of Belton, his daughter, Martha Bellens-Martin and husband Mark of Dallas, and his son Steven of Temple. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Brandon Bozon and his wife Jessica, and Brianna Bozon, and his great granddaughter, Elisabeth Bozon. Edward is also survived by his two sisters, Jose Ghys-Bellens, and Hilda Robberechts-Bellens, his brothers and sisters-in-law Francis & Dorine Cardyn and Bart & Brigitte Cardyn and Marina Cardyn and numerous nieces and nephews.
