Dr. Dean Howes passed away Saturday, December 11, 2010 at the age of 76 in Boise, Idaho, surrounded by family. Dean will be missed greatly by family and friends around the world. Dean was born in 1934 in Marysvale, Utah to Earnest and Dorthea Acton Howes. Dean quit school at the age of 13 and moved to California, and got a job as a truck driver. This was not the high life he imagined, so at 16, he followed his parents to Elko, Nevada to be with his family. In Elko, he found a home and made many life-long friends. Dean always credited the teachers at Elko High School and the entire community for saving his life and for giving him a chance for a better life than what he thought possible. While he was in high school, he met the love of his life, Karen Wayman, when she asked him to the Sadie Hawkin’s dance.

Dean was a track star and a scholarship football athlete at the University of Utah while Karen was at the University of Nevada Reno until Dean and Karen decided to get married. They began their married life as students at the University of Nevada. Dean and Karen later became ranchers in Austin, Nevada, and while they loved that life, Dean decided to finish college and pursue a degree in Veterinary Medicine while raising their three children. Karen completed her degree and become a teacher and Dean ultimately graduated with a Ph.D. in animal nutrition from Washington State University at Pullman.

Dean began his career as a professor at the University of Alberta where he taught and did research. He was instrumental in developing a brand new research station in Edmonton. He moved on to the University of Idaho to do research and run the research station in Caldwell. Never one to stay idle Dean entered into business as a partner in Kellogg Mills, a privately owned feed and seed business, which he and his partners later sold to the J.R. Simplot Company. He remained for a time working for Mr. Simplot until he was given an opportunity with Alltech Inc. an international biotech company based in Ireland. Dean was instrumental in the tremendous growth of this company by bringing new products to market and eventually became a consultant and was much sought after world wide for his knowledge and expertise in the field of animal nutrition.

More importantly Dean believed in family and he was a beloved husband, parent, grandparent, and friend.

The family would like to recognize St. Alphonus Hospital for their tremendous care. We want Roni, the ICU nurse, and Jimmy, the respiratory therapist, to know how much their very dear care of our father meant to our family during his passing. We especially want to thank Dr. Cyprus our family physician and Dr. River our family’s neurologist for care that went beyond professional and will forever touch our hearts.
