Dr. Allen R. Walker, Director of Pediatric Emergency Medicine at Johns Hopkins Children’s Center from 2003 to 2011, died July 16, 2021, at the age of seventy-five.
Allen joined the Division of Pediatric Emergency Medicine at JHC in 1989 after serving in the U.S. Navy as a military base pediatrician for two years and continuing to hone his medical skills as an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine and The University of Nevada School of Medicine. He then spent several years in private practice to understand all aspects of excellent pediatric care.
In addition to his role as Director of Pediatric Emergency Medicine, Allen became an advocate for children in the state of Maryland becoming a nationally recognized expert in child victimization working closely with MD Child Protective Services and the judicial system to create a safe environment for youth.
Allen was a member of the staff of the Maryland Institute for Emergency Medical Services System from 1995 to 2017 spending much of that tenure as the Associate EMS Director for Pediatrics. His focus was continuous improvement of care and communication among all medical personnel who work with children,
Allen is survived by his wife of 50 years, Barbara, his daughters, Jessica H. Friedland of Hanover, PA, Meredith L. Walker of Reston, VA; two grandchildren, Kaylyn W. Friedland and Brayden N. Friedland of Hanover, PA and a brother, John L. Walker of San Diego, CA. He was predeceased by his brother, Lawrence G. Walker.
All who worked with Allen recognized his true gift as an educator who always advocated for doing what was in the best interest of the child.
