Passed away Tuesday, June 21, 2016 at the age of 74. He was born January 30, 1942 in Grand Rapids, MI. His parents were Lewis E. and Florence E. (Dwight) Rector, who preceded him in death. He was united in marriage to Pamela Marks on February 14, 1981. Doug graduated from the Vicksburg High School class of 1959. He received a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Arts from Western Michigan University and a PhD in Medicinal Chemistry from Washington State University.
He was a Scientist for the Upjohn Company with over 30 years employment. Doug was a member of the American Chemical Society for 53 years. In his youth, Doug was a member of 4-H; attended the National Music Camp in Interlochen, Michigan and was a member of the Western Michigan University marching band. As an adult, Doug’s favorite activity was running long distance. He entered several 10K races and two marathons.
He also loved reading, sailing, camping, golfing, going out to dinner with friends and taking long walks with his best friend and wife, Pam. Doug placed a high value in education and in recent years worked with the Lawrence Alumni Association to increase educational opportunities for students and graduates of Lawrence High School. Doug is survived by his wife, Pamela Rector; children, Sheryl (Mark) Purcell, Scott (Rachel) Rector, Steve (Kelly) Rector, Lisa (Mark) Kopitz and Andrea Breese; 12 grandchildren; father-in-law and mother-in-law Robert and Jane Marks; and several cousins.
