Dorothy was born on December 23, 1952 in Peru to Carl and Catherine (Dondelinger) Soeder. She attended the local grade school and graduated from LaSalle-Peru High School. Her desire was to become a teacher. She graduated from Maycrest College and proceeded to her teaching career, teaching first and second grade. Dorothy would continue her education at the University of Illinois and received her Masters Degree, and then proceeded to get a second Masters Degree in Administration Activities.

In the interim, Dorothy developed multiple sclerosis. She went to the University of Chicago Hospital where Dr. Arnson chose Dorothy for a study that he developed for M.S. Dorothy was diagnosed at the of 29. She completed the study and continued with Dr. Arnson, who called her indestructible. Dorothy was the last of the patients in the study that was alive. Dr. Arnson retired in 2020 during COVID. The drug that Dr. Arnson developed was BetaSeron, which kept her fighting the M.S. until she became allergic to it. Dorothy became wheelchair bound, but she continued to fight until the end.

Survivors include her sister, Elizabeth Soeder of Peru.

She was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters, Susan Soeder and Caroline Weil.
