Dorothy Ellis Binckley

Longtime Columbia resident Dorothy “Dottie” Binckley died on December 14th after a brief illness. One of Columbia’s pioneer first residents, Mrs. Binckley moved to the Longfellow neighborhood in 1967 with her husband and five children to take advantage of the new community’s abundant open space, neighborhood pools and excellent schools.

Born in Dorothy Louise Ellis in 1931 in Red Lion, PA to Adam Raymond Ellis and Laura Bennington Ellis, Mrs. Binckley was a 1950 graduate of the York County Hospital’s nursing school. After graduating with her RN, she attended the University of Pennsylvania where she met her husband, James Binckley. The couple married in 1952, moved to Florida and raised the first four of their children. The family later moved to Maryland and completed their family with the addition of two more sons. Mrs. Binckley attended the University of Maryland to participate in the first class of Nurse Practioners graduating in 1979 and completed her studies in Nursing by receiving a BS from the College of Notre Dame in Baltimore in 1983.

She worked for Harbor Health Hospital and the Johns Hopkins University where she specialized in gerontology. In addition to her professional life, Mrs. Binckley was instrumental in forming Grass Roots of Columbia, the Howard County (now Gilchrist) Hospice and was an active volunteer for Christ Episcopal Church, the League of Women Voters and the Longfellow Friends of the Traditional Fourth. She loved to read biographies and collected first editions of Henry James and other writers. Her husband of 55 years died in 2008. She is survived by her six children, Ann Gold of Sarasota, FL, Jim Binckley of Chambersburg, PA, Betsy Gordon of Baltimore, MD, David Binckley of Goleta, CA, John Binckley of Huntington Beach, CA and Christopher Binckley of Philadelphia, PA, her sister, Linda Ellis Artman of Palm Beach Gardens, FL, seven grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and one grandnephew.
