Dorothy Johnson Hutchison, 89, of Norwich, died Thursday, October 24th, 2013. She was born in Brooklyn, New York on April 16, 1924, the daughter of Melvin and Mary “Mae” (Cooke) White. She met Gilbert J. Johnson, a handsome sailor serving during WWII. She came to Connecticut to marry him. Together they had five children. With the intention of going out to work until they saved enough money to build their own home, in 1956 she began working at Norwich State Hospital as a charge aide. Gilbert’s sudden death in August of 1960 dramatically changed her hopes and dreams for her family. Left to raise their children as a single mother, she continued her working career, retiring from there after twenty five years of employment. Not one to be idle, and always willing to be of help, she returned there to work another eight years before she officially considered herself truly retired.
An avid bowler, Dorothy was a member of the Ten Pin Leagues in both Norwich and Groton; she became a member of the Rose City Senior Center and also the Groton Senior Center. Always an active person, she enjoyed doing aerobics and continued to do so, as well as bowling frequently until the last eighteen months of her life. She enjoyed crocheting in her quiet time, and even though she was a native born New Yorker, she was a lifelong Boston Red Sox fan. A member of the Connecticut State Employees Association for many years, she was also was a member of St. Mary Church, Norwich.
Dorothy is survived by four children and their families; daughters Bonnie and husband Doug McIntyre of Norwich, Sandra and husband Mike Lafayette of Norwich, Barbara Formiglio of Lisbon, and a son William Johnson of Norwich. Eight grandchildren, eleven Great Grandchildren and one Great Great Grandchild survive her as well. In addition to her husband, she is predeceased by one daughter; Maureen Johnson and one sister; Virginia Allard.
