Dorothy Millner was born to Alfred and Ada Hall in Leeds in the North of England on September 20, 1925. She grew up in a loving family in Harrogate, much admired by her little sister Marjorie with whom she had a special bond. Dorothy was a talented dancer, taking the lead in school shows. She became a bright, attractive and stylish young woman who qualified at college in French Catering and Hotel Management and started her career in a well-respected local hotel.
She lived through the privations of the war years in Britain, still able to make her personal fashion statement despite rationing. She was known as a charming and fun loving woman with a caring disposition. She met the ‘love of her life’, Thomas Maurice Millner, a member of the US Army, in Harrogate and married him in May 1945. In 1946 she left her family to travel to Tommy’s home in Virginia, an enormous step for an English girl at the time.
Early on in her time in the USA she lost her first baby, an event which shaped her future life.
Dorothy faced difficult times in her life but was a survivor. Despite becoming an American citizen she retained her English persona, her Yorkshire accent and a strong family connection in Britain. She was blessed by a long and happy marriage lasting more than fifty years; by her sons, granddaughters and great grandchildren and by her strong faith which saw her through the loss of Tommy nine years ago.
She is survived by her sister Marjorie Heimbuch of New Jersey; niece and nephew John and Anne Moore of England; sons Thomas Alfred Millner of Dallas and William Carl Millner of Ft. Walton Beach; granddaughters Morgan Moore and Trixie Brownlee and great grandchildren Samantha and Bailey Brownlee of North Texas.
Dorothy was a big personality who couldn’t and wouldn’t be ignored. We will never forget her.
