Dorothy Graham Sibson died Thursday October 4th at Solaris HealthCare Center in Merritt Island, with her closest friends by her side. She was 102 years old.
Dorothy came to Cocoa Beach from Trinidad in November 1959 and in January 1960 she was the ninth person employed by McDonnell Aircraft on the Mercury project in Hangar “S”. She enjoyed reminiscing about those early days: “Ham” the chimp astronaut, sharing coffee with original astronauts, and paging engineers in Swahili are some treasured recollections. She was named a pioneer in the Missile, Space and Range Program and was interviewed by Space Walk of Fame to record some of the early memories.
In 1964, as broker/owner, Dorothy established Sibson Realty which she operated actively until her late 90’s. She also loved gardening and treasured her Master Gardener recognition. Also treasured were wonderful memories of the years she lived and traveled abroad in the late 1940’s and 50’s. Particularly valued were seeing the fabled Mountains of the Moon, green flash at Honolulu and the great surprise of hearing “Oh Susanna”, a childhood favorite, sung by little girls in Zanzibar and later by children in Peking.
She asked that any memorials be sent to Nestor Hebert Shoe Fund or Endeavor School, or charity of your choice.
