Dorothy Elias Matanin, 90, of Linthicum Heights, Maryland, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, February 2, 2022. Dorothy was the beloved wife of the late Harold Robert “Bob” Matanin; loving mother of Karen I. Westwood, Robin M. Almen and her husband, Jeff, Christopher R. Matanin and his wife, Deborah, and Jeffrey W. Matanin and his wife, Jennifer. She was grandmother to Lara, Rachel, Ben, Kate, Joshua, Luke, Alyssa, Michaella, Sarah and JD (John Douglas). She is also survived by her great-grandchildren, Lyla, Theo and Eli (John Elias), and many nieces, nephews and loving friends.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, Michael and Kaffa Elias; and her siblings, Mary Todd, Samuel Elias, Gabriel Elias, Elizabeth West, Ralph Elias, Catherine Jenkins and William Elias. Dorothy was born and raised in Donora, Pennsylvania. She graduated from the Robert Morris School of Business in Pittsburgh and worked her first job there as an office manager. Dorothy also modeled high-fashion designer clothes for the city’s department stores and retained her elegant sense of style throughout her life. Living briefly in Ohio and Indiana, the family settled in Linthicum Heights where she and Bob raised their children. Dorothy was an active volunteer at her children’s schools and sporting events, Girl and Boy Scouts, the Linthicum Heights Women’s Club, and a host of other activities.
Along with Bob, Dorothy was a volunteer for the B&O Railroad Museum for 17 years, a long-time member of the Linthicum Heights United Methodist Church, and an original homeowner and member of the Crestwood Improvement Association. She enjoyed gardening, decorating, arts and crafts, and keeping a beautiful, welcoming home for her family and friends. When she left the Sears Roebuck and Company in Glen Burnie to join her husband in retirement, they packed their bags and traveled the world, returning with treasures, stories, and priceless memories.
