Dorothy Ellen Fitzgerald, passed away on November 3, 2020. She was born on October 24, 1928, to the late Joseph A. and Apolonia Welsh in Lafayette. She graduated from Romney High School and the University of St. Francis in Fort Wayne.

Dorothy met the love of her life, the late Donald J. Fitzgerald at a CYO Dance and married him on August 4, 1951, at St. Boniface Catholic Church.

Dorothy loved her faith and was the first lay teacher at St. Boniface School. She was instrumental in implementing the CCD program and various other programs at St. Boniface. She also received from Pope John Paul II a special Apostolic Blessing acknowledging her generosity and service to her parish. Dorothy’s first teaching position was in Twelve Mile, Indiana before she was married. When her daughters went to school, she worked for the Lafayette School Corporation as a Title l tutor at Washington Elementary and then at Oakland Elementary as the school secretary.

Dorothy loved her two daughters: Mary Beth Fitzgerald of Lafayette and Jane Ellen Wastl (Mark) of Carmel, IN. She also loved her three beautiful grandchildren: Nicole Rainford (Seth) Brentwood, TN, Ryne Wastl (Stephanie) Nashville, TN, and Alaina Wastl of Carmel, IN. She attended all their school and athletic activities as well as taking great pride in their academic and sports achievements. She was blessed with four great grandchildren: Madeline, Isabella, Ben, and Olivia Rainford.

Dorothy is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and two brothers: Joseph Jr. and Donald Welsh. She is survived by a brother, Robert Welsh (Marge) of Fort Worth, TX.

We would like to thank the staff at Aster Place and especially the Memory Care/Via Quest Hospice nurses and CNAs for their loving care of Dottie.
