Dorothy Elizabeth Brown, 99, of Bronx, NY passed away on Saturday, August 1, 2020 at Montefiore Medical Center, Bronx, NY. She was born, Dorothy Elizabeth Stanton in Woodbine, MD on July 18, 1921 to Philip and Sadie (Dorsey) Stanton. Her birth was exactly eight days after her father’ s birthday, and eight days before her mother ‘ s birthday; she was very proud of that fact. Dorothy, affectionately known as “Dot”, was the eldest of nine children.
Dorothy assisted her parents in raising her siblings. In the mid to late 40s Dorothy and her husband, Charles Butler, moved to the Bronx (NY).
Dorothy worked for many years as both a domestic worker and a home health aide. In 1949, while living in The Bronx, she began attending Thessalonia Baptist Church (now Thessalonia Worship Center) and served in many capacities such as the president of the Matron Crusaders (later called the Missionary Crusaders).
In 1987 she married fellow church member Oliver Brown, who was a pianist.
Dorothy leaves to mourn her loving sisters Erma Prather and Clara Dorsey; sisters-in-law Faith Stanton and Bertha Stanton and brother-inlaw Johnie Watts. She is also survived by a host of nieces, nephews and godchildren who adored her.
She is preceded in death by her parents Philip and Sadie; brothers, Raymond and John; sisters, Mildred, Mary and Elaine; and husbands, Charles Butler and Oliver Brown.
