Dorothy B. Fortner, 90, of Elkhart, passed away peacefully of natural causes at Elkhart General Hospital at 1:54 p.m. Monday, July 15, 2013.
She was born in Elkhart on July 5, 1923, to the late Ward L. “Lee” and Gladys Luce.
She married John R. Fortner on Aug. 26, 1944, in Kimmel. He passed away in 1964.
Also preceding Dorothy in death were her sister, Lila Stillson; her brother, Wendell Luce; and her grandson, Mark L. Makin.
Surviving are her children, John L. (Liang) Fortner of Denver, David B. Fortner of Dana and James E. “Jim” (Dinell Marker) Fortner, Donna M. (Carl) Brown and Joseph R. (Carla Bass) Fortner, all of Elkhart; nine grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren.
Dorothy was a homemaker who enjoyed taking care of her family. She liked music and loved to sing along to her favorite country and gospel tunes. She also had a wonderful sense of humor and was overheard at her 90th birthday party saying, “I may not sing well, but I can sing loud!” She will be best remembered, however, as being a die-hard Chicago Cubs fan; forever hopeful that “next year” would bring a World Series title.
